University of Cumbria


Established in 2007, the University of Cumbria is a public university located in the city of Carlisle which has its roots extending back to the teacher training college established in the 1890s.

Later on, in August 2007, the University of Cumbria was formed as a result of a merger between the Cumbria Institute of the Arts also known as the Cumbria College of Art & Design), the University of Central Lancashire- Cumbrian campus and the St Martin's College, Lancaster. Subsequently in the month of January 2007, the institution was officially granted its university status by the Privy Council. 


Home to over 10,000 students, the University of Cumbria offers a range of undergraduate, postgraduate, CPD and short courses in various subjects out of which the University is particularly famous it's Paramedical Science, Teacher Training, and Law courses.

The University of Cumbria has a total of 6 campuses. Out of which the University's headquarters are located in Carlisle while the other major campuses are at Lancaster, Ambleside, Penrith and Workington. 

Used as a military hospital during the First and the second world war, the University of Cumbria's Fusehill Street campus located at the Fusehill St provides a range of courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The campus also houses a Learning Gateway Building along with a well-stocked library which contains an extensive collection of Health, Education, Social Science and Law resources.

Established in October 1822, the Cumbria University's Brampton Road campus formerly known as the Cumbria Institute of the Arts is now home to the University's Institute of the Arts with over 1000 full-time arts students. Apart from this, the campus also houses a Stanwix Theatre, the Vallum Gallery, and a state of art library. 

The Cumbria's Penrith campus offers its students with degree programmes including Conservation, Forestry, Outdoor Leadership, Applied Science and Outdoor Studies, while the University's Lancaster campus provides courses related to nursing, radiography, social work, occupational health, humanities, sports and arts. Inaugurated on 1 December 2009, the Ambleside campus offers a host course in outdoor studies, forestry, conservation business, leadership and sustainability while the Workington campus offers courses related to radiation protection.
